The first YouTube/CNN Presidential Debate - this one with the the Democrats - just concluded. I said I would wait until I saw it, to say how much of a revolution it was. Having seen it, I think it was revolutionary indeed - and, in fact, as much a leap forward in the debates and democracy as the first Presidential debates on television in 1960.
I don't ever recall seeing a debate in either party with such a refreshing, humorous, frank, and incisive a series of questions. The people asking the questions in the YouTube videos were far more on the money than any panel of experts.
And the candidates rose to the occasion with honest and important answers.
Barack Obama, when asked about whether he is a legitimate African-American candidate - given his access to power - quipped, "Ask the New York cabbies!" (African-Americans unfortunately have a tougher time getting a cab to stop for them and pick them up than Caucasian New Yorkers - I'm Caucasian, I've lived in New York all of my life, and maybe this problem has gotten a little better but it still exists).
Hillary Clinton, responding to a question about the election of Bush in 2000, responded that, actually, Bush was not elected President.
John Edwards, on health care, gave an impassioned plea for the need for all Americans to have it - he did this even though he had exceeded his time, and Anderson Cooper was trying to cut him off.
Joe Biden answered a YouTube question about gun control, asked by someone who was armed with an automatic weapon which he called his "baby". Answered Biden: if that's your baby, you need help....
And that's just a sampler.
Even Anderson Cooper, who did seem to unfairly cut off the minor candidates - such as Mike Gravel - more than the major, was in fine form tonight. The final questioner asked each candidate to cite something liked and disliked about the candidate to the left. Kucinich quipped that they there was no one standing to his left on the stage (true). Cooper replied - we tried to find someone to your left but there was no one...
There's nothing like the fresh of democracy to energize a debate, and give people clearer choices. There was concern, before the debate, about CNN exercising too much control in choosing the YouTube questions to be shown - I don't see how the choices could have been any better.

Aim 6.2.32.1 has been released today and has now added the much anticipated Proxy Settings. Mmm smell your money go bye bye! On the signup page, they boldly highlight this 4.9% APR and it sure does look pretty but guess what thats for, Cash Advance Checks, and Balance Transfers only, NOT PURCHASES. Ya so pretty much, the average college student won’t use those features. Unfortunately this 4.9% APR lasts only 6 months! Gasp! This sounds like those Cable and Satellite provider commercials, we’re only cheap for 6 months after that your on your own! So basically your stuck with 18.24% VARIABLE rate, Y’all better pay your credit card bills on time or its harassing phone calls for you!

The moral of this story is, this credit card isn’t different from all the other college credit cards out there. Your first credit card will always be stinky, and there’s no way around it. I'm trying to use pieces of furniture that I have in my home, and thinking of ways to move them around so that I get the best use out of them. Google vs MS

Interesting news today about how Microsoft is having to modify Vista to make it easier for third parties to deploy their own desktop search products on their flagship operating system. This will be part of SP1 for Vista and should be ready to be released through their normal software distribution channels. This change was instigated by a complaint Google made regarding how Microsoft made it very difficult to turn off Vista’s built in search facility if an alternative search product was installed. This causes a drain on system resources and potential software conflicts.

An interesting idea that Marketing Pilgrim put forward is that Microsoft will be dragging it’s feet on this service pack to try and get as many people hooked on it’s product set as possible. Originally SP1 was slated to be available later this year, but this announcement pushes it into the beginning of next year. Is Google really to blame? Or is Microsoft simply using this as an excuse to hide slippage on their SP1 release? Interesting .. the games big companies play.

business trip

I’m going out of town tomorrow for a short business trip that involves attending a casual event with about 50 of my co-workers, most of whom I’ve only met on the phone or via email. I’ve mentally planned outfits and mentally discarded each, and I’m getting entirely too worked up about it. This morning I found a pair of paints in my closet that I had forgotten about, and decided that I’d wear them to work and if they stayed comfy all day, I’d pack them for my business event on Thursday. Well, they’re comfy, but I just noticed a stain on the left leg. It’s faint, but not so faint that some eagle eye wouldn’t notice it. Back to the drawing board, I suppose.
I originally planned to wear a paid of dark brown dressy capri pants, a favorite shirt, and then a lightweight denim blazer / jacket in case it’s cool in the city. I nixed that after I tried on the pants and discovered I can’t get them zipped or buttoned. I haven’t gained a pound - the pants shrunk!I think this is going to require a special trip out to the stores tonight for a new pair of paints. I’m going to attempt to find a pair in my size in the long length at the new Old Navy by my house, but should that fail, I’ll go with a new pair of capris.

BP factory

The recent news about BP refinery in Whiting, Indiana has raised some serious issues.It is regarding BP getting a break on dumping into Lake Michigan.In order to get this oil from Canada, Indiana regulators have allowed BP to release 54 percent more ammonia and 35 percent more sludge into Lake Michigan each day. BP fires back saying that only treated water is going to be released into Lake Michigan. This treated water is 99 percent water, not sludge and ammonia.
First, the amount of ammonia that BP wants to dump is still less than half of what federal guidelines allow.the BP Factory has fulfilled all the requisites from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the U.S. and such can be found at the BP Whiting Refinery Fact Sheet.I find it interesting that the Tribune did not bother to mention that at all.it’s more about sensationalizing the material to increase newspaper readership and bring in more revenue. it’s a bit sad to see but that’s just business nowadays.
Today,Energy independence and clean water are both important to us. We don't wget to pick one or the other. We must, instead, determine which one has to be advanced a little at the expense of the other at any given moment.if the BP Factory has cleared all the necessary rules it is ok to be installed.There will also be, upon completion, an additional 80 full-time BP employees at the facility.and an additional 2000 jobs will be created for contract workers during peak construction.The jobs it provides, the development it brings, the production of oil that fulfills the total demand etc. are good and can be counted upon those good things.Canadian crude oil is a viable option for us, and I’m all for elimating our dependence on the Middle East to provide the fuel our country needs.BP plans to spend more than $3 billion to modernize the Whiting Refinery to process additional heavy crude oil from Canada.As part of the modernization the facility will invest about $150 million into further enhancing the existing wastewater treatment facility.

I rented it through Blockbuster online and watched it last night, I am a huge fan of Nicholas Cage, haven’t seen a movie yet with him in it that I have not liked, Ghost Rider was no exception, I was surprised however that the movie also had another one of my favorite actors ” Sam Elliott”.This movie had me glued to my seat right from the get go, I am not one to watch movies a 2nd time, but Ghost Rider is one that I would definately consider watching again.

I just got back from whitewater rafting all day on Saturday down in Riggins, Idaho. We rafted 25 miles of the Salmon River over about 8 hours…it was definitely a long and hot day. The sun was on us all day long and the temperatures were in the high 90s which gave me a pretty bad case of heat exhaustion. But the rafting was definitely a bunch of fun, we hit a couple class four rapids and those were a lot of fun. A couple of the rafts flipped over but everyone made it out safely.

Tonight my hubby got a phone call from a friend he went to school with as well as them both joining the Navy together, he now lives in the state of Washington and came back this summer to see family and friends.So around 7pm he pulls into the driveway in a Harley Davidson, this was one awesome bike he had, I thought perhaps he rode it the entire way from Washington and he said he had to bring his family along which consist of 2 parrots, so he drove a motor home back with him and his 2 parrots and hauled the bike back that way….I had to laugh that he takes his parrots with him, but hey, why not, because as he said, they are his family.This is the 1st time I have had the opportunity to meet this guy, and I am happy that he took the time to reconnect with his old school buddy Dave.

It’s not that I haven’t been writing anything, I have a couple of posts in draft state at the moment waiting to get finished, it’s just that I have been feeling a little reflective over the past two weeks.You see, I’ve been re-evaluating some of the goals that I set for myself for this year, and it would seem a major one is going to be relegated to a secondary one, you know what I mean. Primary goals are actively pursued and there is much focus on achieving them. Secondary goals are those which you have in mind, but you are more willing to let the opportunities of that goal present themselves, rather than actively seeking them out.

In a couple of weeks I will be off on a photography trip to the USA and Jamaica. In the meantime, I will be spending my time working out a plan that will help me to re-focus on my primary goals. It’s possible that I may also review what has been going on over the past six months, so that I know what has actually been achieved and what is still to be done.

The Queen

Last night, well, early this morning I watched the movie "The Queen". Starring Helen Mirren as the Monarch. First off, I have to say they did a remarkable job with Mirren's makeup to look like Elizabeth II, and James Cromwell as Prince Phillip was a very good shot. Even Michael Sheen as Tony Blair turned out to be a great choice--although he took a while to grow into the role--by the end he really was a very good Tony Blair look alike. That being said...Who in the world would think of Alex Jennings for Prince Charles? I mean, in Alex Jennings looks the part of the Crown Prince of England--but Puh-Lease!!! He's far more handsome than the real Prince--I absolutely could not go with them there--every time he was on screen--the movie lost me. Another distraction was Sylvia Syms as the Queen Mother. It was actually a rude way to have the Queen Mum portrayed--this character was aloof and 'dumb', yet every account you read of the real Queen Mum--she was smart as a tack with a quick humor. This was just some dumb, aloof old lady nearing senility--and that was wrong.
I thought this whole movie was a slam on the Monarchy, and then to find out that Helen Mirren was unable to re-arrange her schedule to have dinner with the Queen--let just say--had I just played her in a movie where she came off looking more sympathetic to a dead deer than she did her former daughter in law---I think I would be uncomfortable sitting in the same room with her either--the Queen is very gifted with a shotgun after all!!

I'm no longer homesick, much happier too. Being homesick is just a stage. I've bypassed it. It all started when I released all my emotions on the phone to my Mumsie. It was really a good cry. Cried for a good 30 minutes and then all was good. No matter how much that I refuse to believe, UTHM is really of high-tech. They do everything online. Registered for my subjects online, registered for my co-curricular subject online and other random stuff. I can't blog for long because I'm using a friend's laptop and she's just away to talk to her dad/mom. I'm just utilising the minimal time I have to blog.I registered for 16 credit hours, and also for GOLF. Muahaha. I'll be Goh, the future golfer. I had a thought in taking Taekwondo, it's offered as a sport. I have to take up sport/uniform body for 1 credit for this semester and also the next semester. I would easily excel in Taekwondo, however, I have to learn something new in my varsity life! So, it's GOLF for now, no more Taekwondo eh.

Hamburger

1 cup milk
1 cup water
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 (.25 ounce) envelope active dry yeast
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon water
DIRECTIONS
Combine the milk, 1 cup of water, butter, sugar and salt in a saucepan. Bring to a boil then remove from the heat and let stand until lukewarm. If the mixture is too hot, it will kill the yeast.
In a large bowl, stir together the flour and yeast. Pour in wet ingredients and stir until the dough starts to pull together. If you have a stand mixer, use the dough hook to mix for about 8 minutes. If not, knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let stand until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Punch down the dough and divide into 12 portions They should be a little larger than a golf ball. Make tight balls out of the dough by pulling the dough tightly around and pinching it at the bottom. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil. After the rolls sit for a minute and relax, flatten each ball with the palm of your hand until it is 3 to 4 inches wide. You may want to oil your hand first. Set rolls aside until they double in size, about 20 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Mix together the egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of water in a cup or small bowl. Brush onto the tops of the rolls. Position 2 oven racks so they are not too close to the top or bottom of the oven.
Bake for 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Remove the rolls from the oven and return them to different shelves so each one spends a little time on the top. Continue to bake for another 5 to 10 minutes, or until nicely browned on the top and bottom.

This week

This week is going to be pretty darn awesome. I don't have to work but three days, today, Tuesday and then I have July 4th off,which is good because no one is really at the bar on those days anyway (at least my bar). And then I work Friday night to make up for that mini-break. I hope this week is fun. I'm really excited for July 4th, because it is one of my favorite holidays. My family always went to theme parks on these days and so it was kind of cool that everyone got along, because normally my family never got along on "special occasions." Transformers

I remember both my brothers used to LOVE watching the transformers cartoon and my big brother even used to draw the robots in detail.I would sometimes join them and watch the show, since there wasn't anything else to watch at that time, and I can still recall some episodes here and there.So BF and I went to watch Transformers last night at GSC. Sis and my two brothers were supposed to join us, but since they only confirmed that they were coming at the last minute, BF only managed to get 2 seats for me and him.
I must say, for a gal like me who doesn't like robots and fighting and such, I very much enjoyed the movie! The animation looked pretty convincing and real. It was cool!

I laughed out loud quite a lot during the funny scenes, but I noticed the people around me didn't. I guess they didn't get the funny scenes!

Bumble bee is very cute! I got all sad and stuff when he got hurt and gave that puppy look.. My verdict, it's so good that this is definitely a must have collection on DVD!
