trip out

whenever we make a trip out to visit the mother in law, part of our drive takes us along US route 58 in southern virginia. it's the part that i dread the most when driving to and from virginia beach. there's no other way for us to get there but through US 58. not only are the state troopers always out in full force ticketing speeders on that particular stretch of highway but every single time we pass near Franklin, VA there this awful hydrogen sulfide (rotten eggs) smell that is thick and unavoidable and lingers about for a good twenty minutes of the drive through the area. how on earth can folks live around a paper mill??? it's not like the paper mill is out in the middle of desolate area. you can see the plant off in the distance overlooking the whole town which includes residential homes, restaurants, hotels, stores etc. do residents just get used to the smell? does it not bother them after an extended period of exposure? what are the health risks associated with living near a paper mill? i can't imagine living with the stench like that. it's horrid. how do paper mills manage to continue to operate when they are obviously polluting the environment with toxic chemicals? and now that we as a society are relying less and less on paper, are plants like these finally going to shut down? when will our drive through south east virginia finally be stench free??

It’s funny what we can learn in our everyday lives that can help us improve our blogging.I recently went to Kansas City to see the historic Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit, and came away with a feeling that the presentation wasn’t quite put together as well as it could have been. Although I’m grateful to see such an amazing piece of history, I think I could have gotten much more out of the experience had some things been organized a little better.
But my loss is your gain. There are still some things that we can glean from a mediocre museum exhibit that can help your blogging.
Organization is Key
Regardless of what you’re presenting, if you don’t organize it well, the entire presentation will suffer. Case in point: I was looking at one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century! Organization is critical.
Information Overload
For each piece, there was the standard sign above it outlining its significance. But in addition to having to read lots of these signs, visitors were also given a phone-like device that allowed you to listen to many of the items in the collection. Sometimes the information from the signs and the audio overlapped. Needless to say, it was a lot of information to swallow.

EEEEEK!

OK, first let me say - EEEEEK! I'm getting too old for movies like this! But, with that being said:This movie is not about blood, guts and gore. It IS highly packed with suspense! The kind where you just KNOW stuff is going to jump out at you, and when it does you scream. And then are thankful that you weren't the only one screaming in the theater! The premise for this particular movie is simple enough - somewhat dysfunctional family packs up all their belongings, invests all their money into a run down, abandoned farm, with the hopes of not only healing the family, but making the land profitable once more. Along comes the mysterious stranger who sets out to help them on their way. Strange things begin to happen, that of course only the young toddler of the family can see. Ghosts, lost souls out for revenge. It gets scary near the end. But of course at the last minute good over comes evil, the bad guy is killed, the lost souls avenged and the family lives happily ever after.

I've been hearing lots of buzz about it and decided to take a closer look. I am so intrigued by this movie.The movie is based on a best-selling book and its success has inspired 20th Century Fox to release it in over 800 screens worldwide which is unusual for such a small non-blockbuster type film.The movie has even inspired an outbreak of teen philanthropy in the form of the Raise a Hand initiative. Some schools have even made it part of their curriculum which is not necessarily good thing per se but show a good deal of interest.I am able to give some buzz about the movie before its release. iPod

I want to get me a good MP3 player for use on the treadmill and stationary bike. I'm considering a iPod, but does anyone know of anything that would work as well for someone that is essentially tone deaf and does not want to spend a lot of money on something quiet yet? It don't even have to be small, since I can connect it to the hand rail / handlebars on the equipment while I am working out rather than carry it around with me all over the place.

BUG of blogger

A couple of months after I first saw it and reported it. I run into it every day at least once, but there is no pattern to it. I select some text and go to create a link using the link button. Instead of a link, I get a reference to the gif file which makes up the link icon and the link code isn't inserted. Plus, it erases part of the text that was selected, so I can't undo it. Normally when I re-do it, everything is fine.

I had no idea

I had absolutely no idea that there was so many power struggles in Vietnam prior to the Vietnam War. Absolutely no idea. The country had dealt with colonization and foreign power struggles for several thousand years. Right now I’m reading about the rise of Ho Chi Minh and I am only to a few years after World War II and it seems like every day, power switches hands.
For those who are wondering what the heck I’m talking about, I’m taking history of the Vietnam War this semester because I (obviously) don’t know very much about the Vietnam War or how it came to be, other than through our very general claim of the rise in communism.

I heart technology

Not that I would disgrace my car with a "I heart technology" but I thoroughly enjoy the conveniences that gadgets give me. And when everything works right, I am in utter awe. Right now, I am at Thai-Esan, a new Thai restaurant that opened last October but I didn't get to visit until last month. I could go to any restaurant and read a book while I eat. But here, they have the big screen LCDs showing NFL highlights in high definition. They have great food. They have Guinness! More importantly, they are within staggering distance of my home should my taste-testing of Guinness go into overtime. So here I am, taking a break, eating spicy food with a refreshing ale. All the while I am here, blogging about this place using their wireless service. I'm also able to monitor PPP for any new opps (with hopes of being able to grab one). You know, if I had brought my headset, I could have used Skype and made a few calls. Yes, this is a slice of heaven that I could enjoy more than once a month. Too bad I can't be here in home attire: my bathrobe and unwashed. But that's the only downside for me ... well, for the other people here if I showed up here like that. Monday-Wednesday-Fridays are literally going to slaughter me. I’ve been going since 7 this morning and just now I’ve finally got some free time. planned

I had planned to spend this past weekend with my girlfriend and with my sister's family. But Thursday night was one of those planning situations where you try to guess with the weather folks as to the extent of icy weather. I'll be glad when weather forecasting becomes a little more accurate than playing a lottery game. For now, we had to decide whether we would be able to make the trip home in time for my girlfriend to make it to work on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the call for snow and ice on Monday through the mountains made risking loss of her job almost a sure thing. It's probably just as well. During the days prior to Thursday, I was feeling more and more tired. I don't know why. By Friday I awoke with this incredible sense of weariness. I tried not to make a big deal about it when we went out for a late breakfast. But when we got back home, I was craving sleep and had returned to bed for a few more hours of shut-eye. What's going on? That's not like me! I feel better now because our weekend was relaxing. There was no rushing around to meet the demands of schedule, job or family. In fact, this is the first time in three years that I have not had to work a Super Bowl weekend. So today I'm ready to get back into the ol' grind. Happy, happy, joy, joy! And to my to-do list, I think that I better add that visit to the doctor that I've been putting off for the past seven years.

This week I have been extremely busy. I have begun to launch in beta several new websites and blogs designed to enable people to collaborate creatively online while profiting from their venture. This is kind of an early phase 1 in preparation for a very big site of enormous proportions later. These sites will feature a collection of blogs under one domain. The blogs will often be written by other bloggers and we will set it up so that they can help each other and benefit from that help financially and possibly socially as well.Regardless I have been up to my eyeballs in databases, PHP, html and lots and lots of FTP uploads as I get things ready to launch. Currently I have much of the preliminary structure uploaded but no content yet so there is not much to see.

Phil Harrison revealed that the PS3 and PSP would eventually be fully functional online marriage. As of now, it's not quite there.

Imagine unifying both platforms, PS3 and PSP. But don't expect total game integration coz there's no way you would wanna play a PSP game on PS3 and HDTV. Oh no, you would not.

Harrison believes the PSP is a great platform for developers, and says Sony is putting a big emphasis on the handheld's capabilities, and not just in relation to the PS3. He says there have been "missed opportunities" with the PSP, saying that despite having the ability to portray PS2-quality games, developers just haven't gone that far.

Last week we got dumped with tons of snow, and today it hit almost 40 degrees! Isn't it funny how this time of year that seems so warm? Today a friend and I went outside to take some pictures of the ice on the trees before it all melted. Just outside our dorm there are a few trees that have one side of their branches covered in ice. As I write this, I am feeling some guilt and remorse for not being a good mommy like some of you fellow bloggers are. Most of you write so positively about your kids, I am feeling the pressure of publicizing what I am going to write....but what the heck, here goes.Recently, I just had a talk with my mom voicing my thoughts that I was a bit biased towards my children. I felt that outwardly, I projected an impression that I love Mei Mei more than Ryan. My mom echoed the sentiment as she claimed that it was pretty obvious that The Big Kid and I favoured Mei Mei more.

I was not shocked by her agreement but it did put me in a new perspective. Did Ryan feel that way too? I certainly did not want to give him the impression that I love him any less but lately, we are having some disciplinary issues with him. Ryan is not a bad kid but when he plays, he forgets everything else. Even if we called him to do certain things, he will remain silent and continue playing despite our numerous attempt to get his attention.

I am so glad

I am so glad I feel much better now. I don't feel as much that my head is somewhere in Cloud 9 taking another medicated trip. I still get tired more often than usual, but at least, I can get some work done without the urge of wanting to sleep every half an hour or so.
I woke up late today because Lem and I decided to catch up on all the Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis episodes that we missed.
And we missed quite a bit.
Stargate Atlantis has a new nemesis - Michael (the former wraith) and his minion of predator-cross-alien monsters. That particular episode was kind of surprising, really, because it was filmed with quite a dark undertone, unlike the usual light scenes.

The gal that claimed her cat gave birth to a litter of 3 kittens and 3 puppies. Apparently Well, now the Institute of Biological Sciences of the University of Passo Fundo has done tests to prove that the proud momma is not the momma of the pups. I'm sure that I am not the only one that is not surprised.
Before the tests were done Geneticist Adil Pacheco, director of the Institute of Biological Sciences of the University of Passo Fundo, took blood samples from the pups and said, “It’s rather simple really. If the puppies prove to have 78 chromosomes, they are dogs. If they have 38, they are cats."
Cassia Aparecida de Souza, 18, had claimed that her cat Mimi had given birth to the three puppies and three kittens (the kittens did not survive).
According to an article at MSNBC, Pacheco was asked by a local newspaper to conduct the test, that has proven the pups to be pups, not Cat-Dogs. Pacheco had said before the results: “It’s not uncommon for mammals to nurse young from another species. The cat gave birth in a field and she likely inherited the puppies from a nearby female dog who had recently given birth."

Ah well, You live and deal right? No more collect calls hopefully, *sigh of relief* That’s DEFINITELY a load off of MY back.
I do have to go there to drop off all of his stuff so he can live and then do a nice countdown until Sunday. But until then, I have 2 exams on Friday and one on Monday to prepare for and evil roads to brave every morning.

one nights

It's one of those nights when one of my neighbours is having home party and karaoke. I have no idea what's the celebration, but my maid who talks to all the maids around my neighbourhood told me it's the old aunty's birthday party. drive me insane

This is going to drive me insane. I have been waiting for a website, not even a graphics intensive one, to load for the past 5 minutes. On average even websites I visit often take me a full minute or more to download.
I need DSL and a computer that has more guts to it than my poor fried out laptop. The poor thing keeps commiting suicide because it overheats and last night I had to wait for 20 minutes for it to figure out what I had asked it to do for me.
Poor little thing is an older model now and while it's doing the best it can, I know it's contemplating stopping all together. Think a lot of it has to do with the soda pop that no one spilled on the keyboard. Or at least that no one admits to having spilled there.

XP or Vista?????

I'm just talking to a friend over here, and since I've been looking at a lot of news, reviews and general stories about Vista, I'm wondering, should I upgrade? There's a lot of pro's and con's, and I'm beyond the requirements for Home Premium, so would it be worth it for me to pick up an upgrade copy?
Anyone else have these thoughts? Anyone sticking with XP for a long time to come? I wonder what's the opinions of the masses, most don't have a nice rig like I do, but for those with the requirements for Aero and with a decent recently purchased PC, what are you going to do?

burned the house

Steven Rautio decided to take revenge after having an arguement with his girlfriend. He cut the tree that he and his girlfriend had just decorated for Christmas into pieces with a chain saw. He then put the pieces into a woodstove to burn them but the stove overheated. He probably stuffed it too full. The overheated wood stove ended up causing a file that burned the house to the ground!
