What a coincidence — I had just been thinking about writing an article about the best kind of site for someone just starting out in internet marketing, when I read Jenn’s post comparing her earnings and sites from a year ago to now.
Consider this statement she makes:
Maybe I need to get back to the basics, maybe updating a few sites on a regular basis is necessary, at least in this stage of my sites.
This really struck me as true.
I have been blogging for money for a year now. Looking at the various kinds of sites that I have, my best-performing site has a lot of original content, and it has a “voice” — you can see my personality in it.
It started out as a blog about an interest of mine. I wrote some original articles, and I linked to a lot of fun and interesting sites related to the topic. When I linked out to a site, I added my own comments to it.
Later on, I did add some content written by others, but I did it in such as way that this content is “reference material”, while the fun part of the blog is my own posts.
This site has done so much better than any of my other sites. It gets lots of inbound links because people like it. I really don’t have to work too hard on getting links for it any more. Some major sites in my subject area have linked to it, without my asking.
I have some sites that are based solely on free articles. They are not doing well, and they are hardly getting any links. Who wants to link to a boring site like that?
I think if you do create a site of all free articles, you have to somehow add value of your own. I am working on this now, but it is hard.
For the beginning blogger / internet marketer, you will have a lot easier time if you write your own content about something that interests you. You still won’t have too many readers at first, but with time, you will get more and more traffic as people find out about you and become interested.
And not only for beginners - even those that have been working at it for a while might consider giving this method a try. It is slower going at first, because you have to create your own content, but in the end it really pays off.
